Universal Design in the Workplace

An image of a cane. PI: Abir Mullick. The purpose of this project is to incorporate AT accommodation strategies with everyday designs to develop and commercialize, in collaboration with Steelcase Inc. and Microsoft Corp., new universal workstations and human interface devices (e.g., keyboard or mouse). To achieve this objective, the specific aims are to: 1) conduct consumer-driven usability studies to identify user needs and supportive characteristics of specialized devices and retrofitted products; 2) determine and prioritize performance measures and design criteria for universal workstations and human interface devices (HIDs) based on usability studies; 3) engage students in design studios at GA Tech and U. of Buffalo to develop preliminary UD concepts that respond to design criteria; 4) develop and test effectiveness of the new UD products in graduate design studios and thesis.
