Overview

Increasing access to people who are separated by distance and time is a common reason for providing distance education. However, consideration of individuals with disabilities is rarely included. In fact, the design of many distance education courses actually erects barriers to participation by students and instructors with disabilities.

Distance education programs should be available to any qualified person, with or without disabilities. At any point in life, a person can acquire a disability, temporarily or permanently. Therefore, whether planning to develop a web-based course or put any information online, knowledge of how disabilities can impact learning from distance education materials is necessary. Module 1 will cover the following types of disabilities and where applicable, their related disability access symbols(Browse to website):

Module 1 will also explore various legal rulings which indicate that educational institutions, both public and private, are required to provide equal access to their distance education programs to individuals with disabilities.
