Publishing PowerPoint to Blackboard
Blackboard is a commonly used course management
system that makes it easy to publish your course to the Web. In this
section, we will walk through the steps involved in publishing your
accessible presentation to an existing Blackboard course. This section
presumes that you know a little bit about Blackboard and that you can
navigate the "control panel" mode of Blackboard.
Organizing Your Presentations: Folders
Our first task in publishing our accessible
presentation is to create a new folder (also known as a directory) within
the Blackboard course; into this folder, we will place the presentation
materials. Follow the following steps to create a new folder
within a Blackboard course:
- Log into your course as the course manager
(instructor)
- Select the "Control Panel" option in the navigation
list (bottom left side of the screen)
- Depending upon where you would like to place the lecture material, select
this from the control panel options. For this example, we will place the lectures
into the "Course Documents" section. This section is listed under the "Content Areas" section of the control panel. Thus, select the "Course Documents" link.
- Select the "Add Folder" link/button
- When prompted, provide the new folder's name and any
other text you want associated with the folder. For this example, we'll
create a new folder called "Accessible HTML Lectures"
We recommend creating a folder for all your
presentations (called "Lectures" or "Presentations". In doing this, you
will create a common folder into which you can place all of your
presentations. We also recommend that you create a new folder for each
presentation. We recommend that you create a folder called "Lecture 1" for
the first presentation, "Lecture 2" for the second, etc. It would be best
to place all of these folders into one main "presentations" folder (as
described in the preceding paragraph).
For this sample exercise, we create a "Accessible HTML
Lectures" folder and then create a "Lecture 1" folder inside of the "Accessible
HTML Lectures" folder.
(see Image
62) shows the screen
within Blackboard for creating the new folder for the "Accessible HTML
Lectures."
(see Image
63) shows the completed,
new folder in which we'll place all the other lectures.
(see Image
64)shows us creating
the new "Lecture 1" folder within the "Accessible HTML Lectures" folder.
Uploading Your Presentation Material
Once you've created your folders, you can then proceed to adding the
lecture material into the Blackboard course.
The next step in publishing your presentation is to upload all of the
HTML, sound, and video files that you created. Each of these files is
needed to create the whole, complete accessible presentation, so you must
upload each of these from your computer onto the Blackboard course (which
most definitely resides on a different computer).
Follow the following steps to upload the presentation files onto the
Blackboard course:
- Log into your course as the course manager (instructor).
- Select the "Control Panel" option in the navigation list (bottom left
side of the screen).
- Browse to the location in which you created your "Lecture 1" folder.
In our case, this is within the "Course Documents" section. Then select
"Accessible HTML Lectures" and then select "Lecture 1." You should now
be in the "Lecture 1" folder of your Blackboard course.
- Select "Add Item" at the top of the screen. This allows you to add
a new item that will be displayed within the "Lecture 1" folder.
- This next page allows you to specify the title and text of the information
that you're going to add. Since we're adding the first lecture, describe
this lecture and then select "Browse" (as shown below) to upload the
HTML presentation file for this presentation.
- When prompted, browse your local computer's hard drive to locate the
file that you would like to upload to the Blackboard course. For now,
select the main HTML document of the presentation (see Image
65).
- Now select "Submit" at the bottom of the page. Blackboard will upload
the HTML presentation, noticing that there are several image files that
are associated with the presentation. In this case, the images
for the slides are missing, and Blackboard is nice enough to point this
out to us and provide a prompt for us to select and upload these image
files too. As prompted, browse your local computer and select
a file for each of the missing image links; be careful that you select
the correct image file for each link (see Image
66).
At this point, you have successfully loaded the accessible HTML presentation
and the associated image links to the BlackBoard course. If you did not
have any other content associated with the presentation, you're finished,
but in this case, we also have the audio and video clips that are a part
of the presentation. Thus we will also need to upload this content to
the BlackBoard course too. The following steps describe how to add content
to a BlackBoard HTML presentation.
- Select "Modify" that is to the right of the "Lecture 1" content link.
This will allow you to edit/modify the existing presentation link that
was just created in the previous set of instructions.
- Once in the "Modify" screen, you want to add the media files to the
presentation. To accomplish this, select "Browse" in the "Content Attachments"
section of the page. Then browse you local computer and select the file
that you want to upload to the BlackBoard course. In this case, we want
to upload the video clip, which is called "HCI.AVI". Browse to this
file and select "OK". Then select "Submit" at the
bottom of the "Modify content" page.
- The file will be uploaded and added to the content module. Depending
upon the side of the file that you're uploading, it could take a few
minutes to upload the file to the BlackBoard course.
- Once the File is added, you should see confirmation. If you browse
to page that shows the content module, you should see that a link to
the new file has been added.
- Repeat this process for any other file that needs to be uploaded that
is associated with your presentation. In this example, we still need
to upload the audio clip, "closing_remarks.wav".
Once you've completed this process, you should see the three files associated
with the presentation: the main HTML file, the AVI (video) file, and the
WAV (audio) file (see Image
67).
Congratulations! You've successfully completed uploading and publishing
your accessible HTML presentation to BlackBoard. If you select the link
to the HTML presentation, you will see your presentation viewed within
the BlackBoard course (see Image
68).
