The previous page introduced the interface of a video editing
software that can be used for captioning video, Windows Media On-Demand
Producer (WMODP).
Note: The
WMODP
software only works with the Windows operating system and the video formats
of .AVI (Audio Video Interlaced) or .WAV files.
This page discusses some techniques specific to using Windows Media On-Demand Producer (WMODP) for captioning including:
Basically, commands allow you to have something happen
at a given time in the video. Windows Media On-Demand Producer (WMODP)
uses commands to create closed-captioning. By default, the command used for captioning is denoted as
"URL: Command n" (where n equals the number of the order that the command was inserted).
Commands are displayed in an area called the "command row", which is located immediately below the timeline (see Image 10).
Note:
A command can be used for other actions (usually involving some kind of
script to process), but this module only addresses using commands for
captioning.
When inserting commands, it is recommended to read the transcript as the video plays and
insert a command at the beginning of each sentence. This creates timings that are closest
to those occurring in the video and have less likelihood of needing to be adjusted later in the captioning process.
- Use the 'C' key:
- Place your cursor in the timeline window.
Note: You need to have the cursor
in the timeline for this key to take effect. Otherwise,
because this command is a
URL
command, an attempt to change the address of the web browser you
are in will occur.
- Start playing the video.
- Following along with the transcript as the video plays, select the 'C' key at the beginning of each sentence.
- Or to insert commands, use the 'C' button in the lower-left of the
timeline (directly below the 'M' button):
- Start playing the video.
- Following along with the transcript as the video plays, select the 'C' button at the beginning of each sentence.
After being inserted, commands can be edited, moved or deleted. Editing of commands occurs within the 'Script Command Properties' dialog box,
which contains the four properties that comprise a command (see Image 11):
- Parameter
- Time,
- Type,
- Comment.
Some important aspects to know about the command properties are:
- 'Parameter' is the actual text of the transcript that is to appear
at a designated time in the video.
- 'Time' holds the time of the video where the text of the 'Parameter' should appear.
- 'Type' must be set to 'WMClosedCaption.'
- 'Comment' does not need to be used.
To edit a command, there are two options:
- In the command row of the timeline:
- Right-click on the command to be edited.
- Select 'Edit.'
- The 'Script Command Properties' dialog box now appears. As needed,
change the parameter, time, type, and comment.
- Select 'OK' to save any changes to the command properties.
- Or to edit a command, use the 'Edit' menu:
- Go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Commands.'
- The 'Edit Commands' dialog box now appears with a list of all
commands that have been created for this video file.
- Select the command to be edited and then select the 'Edit' button.
- The 'Script Command Properties' dialog box now appears. Make any
changes to parameter, time, type, and comment.
- Select 'OK' to save any changes to the command and close the 'Script
Command Properties' dialog box.
- You are returned to the 'Edit Commands' dialog box. As needed,
select other commands to be edited and repeat steps 3-5.
- When no more commands need to be edited, select 'OK' to close
the 'Edit Commands' dialog box.
To move a command:
- Select the command to be moved in the timeline.
- Drag the command left or right to set the point in the video where the command should occur.
As you move the command, two references are provided that reflect where the command is being set:
- Above the timeline and audiometer in the left side of the project window, the current frame of video for that
particular time is displayed and identified.
- Below the timeline in the bottom-right corner of the project window, a time meter
identifies the current time in the video.
Note: Moving a command has the effect of fast-forwarding or rewinding
video and is good for commands that need to be precise.
To delete a command, there are two options:
- In the command row of the timeline:
- Right-click on the command to be deleted.
- Select 'Remove.'
- Or to delete a command, use the 'Edit' menu.
- Go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Commands.'
- The 'Edit Commands' dialog box now appears with a list of all
commands that have been created for this video file.
- Select the command to be deleted and then select the 'Remove' button.
- As needed, select other commands to be deleted and repeat steps 2-3.
- When no more commands need to be deleted, select 'OK' to close the 'Edit Commands' dialog box.
Windows Media On-Demand Producer features the ability
to indicate the beginning of a sequence of scenes such as a fight or a
topic in a recorded PowerPoint presentation, by inserting markers in the
video. This allows the user to skip directly to designated points of interest
or focus instead of having to constantly fast-forward and rewind.
Note: Markers are an important accessibility
feature for individuals with learning disabilities but are also beneficial
to all users.
To insert markers, there are two options:
- Use the 'M' key.
- Place your cursor in the timeline window.
Note: You need to have the cursor
in the timeline for this key to take effect.
- Start playing the video.
- Following along with the transcript as the video plays, select the 'M' key when a new sequence or topic is presented.
- Or to insert markers, use the 'M' button in the lower-left of the timeline (directly above the 'C' button).
- Start playing the video.
- Following along with the transcript as the video plays, select
the 'M' button when a new sequence or topic is presented.
After being inserted, markers can be edited, moved or deleted. Editing of markers occurs within the 'Marker Properties' dialog box,
which contains the three properties that comprise a marker:
Some important aspects to know about the marker properties are:
- 'Time' holds the time of the video where the marker is set.
- 'Name' is meaningful text that identifies the marker and will be displayed
for the user.
- 'Comment' does not need to be used.
To edit a marker, there are two options:
- In the markers row of the timeline:
- Right-click on the marker to be edited.
- Select 'Edit.'
- The 'Marker Properties' dialog box now appears. As needed,
change the name, time, and comment.
- Select 'OK' to save any changes to the marker properties.
- Or to edit a marker, use the 'Edit' menu:
- Go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Markers.'
- The 'Edit Markers' dialog box now appears with a list of all
markers that have been created for this video file (see Image
12).
- Select the marker to be edited and then select the 'Edit' button.
- The 'Marker Properties' dialog box now appears. Make any
changes to name, time, type, and comment.
- Select 'OK' to save any changes to the marker and close the 'Marker Properties' dialog box.
- You are returned to the 'Edit Markers' dialog box. As needed,
select other markers to be edited and repeat steps 3-5.
- When no more markers need to be edited, select 'OK' to close
the 'Edit Markers' dialog box.
To move a marker:
- Select the marker to be moved in the timeline.
- Drag the market left or right to set the point in the video where the marker should occur.
As you move the marker, two references are provided that reflect where the marker is being set:
- Above the timeline and audiometer in the left side of the project window, the current frame of video for that
particular time is displayed and identified.
- Below the timeline in the bottom-right corner of the project window, a time meter
identifies the current time in the video.
Note: Moving a marker has the effect of fast-forwarding or rewinding
video and is good for markers that need to be precise.
To delete a marker, there are two options:
- In the markers row of the timeline:
- Right-click on the marker to be deleted.
- Select 'Remove.'
- Or to delete a marker, use the 'Edit' menu.
- Go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Markers.'
- The 'Edit Markers' dialog box now appears with a list of all
markers that have been created for this video file.
- Select the marker to be deleted and then select the 'Remove' button.
- As needed, select other markers to be deleted and repeat steps 2-3.
- When no more markers need to be deleted, select 'OK' to close the 'Edit Markers' dialog box.
