Synching and Publishing in MAGpie

The previous page introduced captioning and segmenting captions using Media Access Generator (MAGpie).

Note: MAGpie only works after downloading in a specific order. Please refer to the MAGpie website for detailed documentation on Installing MAGPIE (browse to website)

This page discusses some techniques specific to synching and publishing using MAGpie including:

Note: Before getting into synching and publishing, you should be familiar with the Interface of MAGpie and Captioning in MAGpie. It is also advisable to read this page before doing the Lab: MAGpie .

Synching Captions

After you have loaded the video file and created the captions, you need to synch the two together.

To synch the captions:

  1. In the 'MAGpie Captionator Window', start with the first row by selecting the number 1 under the row column.
Note: When a row is selected, it is highlighted in a different color (purple) than the other rows (cream) (see Image 32) .

  2. Start the video by selecting the 'Play' button from the playback toolbar.
Note: It is a good idea to have one hand on the mouse to start the playback and another on the F9 button, because it is possible that the captioning begins at the very beginning of the video.

  3. Select F9 at the beginning of where each caption is spoken; this inserts the synchronization marks (time) into the tracks (see Image 33 ).
Note: Try to get the synch timings as close as possible but do not worry if they are not exact; you can edit the synching later.

  4. Once you have finished inserting the synchronization marks, you can view the playback by selecting the play button.

To edit the synching:

  1. Select the stop button.
  2. Remove the time from the Start Time column for that row that needs editing by two options:
    • Selecting and editing the Start Time cell for that row.
    • Or, right-clicking on that column and selecting the "Unset Caption Time" option.
  3. Use the slider to back up the video a little.
  4. Select the play button and press F9 again.
Note: The "End Time" column is not used as often as the "Start Time" column, but is useful when captioning needs to be removed from the screen. For example, when there are long periods of silence between captions. The End Time of a caption should be greater than the start time of that caption, but less than the Start Time of the next caption.

While the video is stopped, there are several options available to edit an individual row.

To edit a row:

  1. Select the stop button.
  2. Right-click on a row to be edited; a drop down menu will appear with a list of options (see Image 34).
  3. Choose one of the following options from the drop down menu.

Publishing the Finished Product

Once you are happy with the synching of the captions, it is time to publish your work.

To publish in MAGpie:

  1. Go the the File menu, then select Save or Save As.
  2. Save the project in the same directory as the media files in the project.
  3. Go to the "Export" menu.
  4. Select the kind of file you wish to save as (either QuickTime SMIL, Real-Player SMIL, or Windows Media Player SAMI).

To edit after publishing:

  1. Open the MAGpie project that needs to be edited.
  2. Make the appropriate changes.
  3. Go to the "Export" menu.
  4. Select the kind of file you wish to save as (either QuickTime SMIL, Real-Player SMIL, or Windows Media Player SAMI).

The next page offers a Lab for Media Access Generator (MAGpie) to facilitate a better understanding of the techniques involved in using this video editing software and its captioning capabilities.
